Berliner Tageszeitung - Luxembourg Minister Warns Trump of 'Lame Duck' Risk Amid Global Updates

Luxembourg Foreign Minister Xavier Bettel has issued a stark warning to President-elect Donald Trump, suggesting that the incoming administration faces a significant risk of diminished influence if it fails to engage in legislative compromise. Speaking on Thursday, November 5, Bettel characterized the recent U.S. midterm election results as a critical signal for Europe regarding the dangers of extreme political positions and discrimination.

Bettel’s comments reflect a growing anxiety among European leaders about the stability of transatlantic relations. He noted that Trump must now navigate a Congress where Democrats have secured majorities in both chambers, a shift that could hinder the president-elect’s agenda if he does not seek bipartisan support. The term "lame duck," which Bettel used to describe a president whose power is waning due to lack of legislative backing, underscores the potential for political gridlock.

The reaction from Luxembourg’s political establishment was divided, illustrating the complex interplay between domestic priorities and global dynamics. Yves Cruchten of the Luxembourg Socialist Workers' Party (LSAP) argued that the election outcomes reinforce the necessity for Europe to "stand on its own two feet." He suggested that an "America First" policy is likely to persist regardless of congressional shifts, thereby necessitating greater European autonomy in foreign and economic affairs.

Conversely, Laurent Zeimet of the Christian Social People's Party (CSV) viewed the results as a validation of American democratic functioning. Despite these divergent views, the consensus among Luxembourg’s political class remains that the U.S. electoral cycle continues to exert profound pressure on European policy planning.

In domestic economic news, the national statistics agency STATEC has released a sobering forecast for Luxembourg’s financial outlook. STATEC projects that the inflation rate will only stabilize at 2.5% by 2028.

The government has indicated that support measures implemented next year may help alleviate some economic pressure. However, these interventions could have the unintended consequence of delaying scheduled wage indexations. Despite the potential for delay, two specific indexation events are currently forecast: one anticipated for mid-2027 and a second for mid-2028.

The timeline has been extended due to Goodyear’s appeals regarding documents seized in Luxembourg. The company has faced serious charges, including involuntary manslaughter, since May 2025.
