Berliner Tageszeitung - Philadelphia's Top 12 Wing Destinations Ranked for 2026

Philadelphia has long established itself as a city where chicken wings are not merely a bar snack but a central component of its culinary identity. As the game-day season approaches, the demand for high-quality wings spans every neighborhood, driving residents and visitors to seek out establishments that offer more than the standard hot sauce and blue cheese routine. A comprehensive review of the city’s wing scene reveals 12 distinct spots that have earned their reputations through consistent quality, unique flavor profiles, and specific preparation techniques.

The ranking begins with Moriarty’s Pub, located in Midtown Village at 11th and Walnut Streets. This establishment has secured the top spot for its commitment to serving whole wings, keeping the drumette and flat joined so that diners do not have to compete for specific parts of the bird. The kitchen operates until midnight on most nights, providing a late-night option for those seeking a substantial meal after evening activities. The primary draw is the house Signature Sauce, which the pub uses as its namesake flavor profile. For those preferring milder options, Honey BBQ and Sweet Thai Chili are available, while Hot offers increased heat. Moriarty’s also serves Wings N’ Things, a platter that pairs Signature Wings with potato skins and fried mozzarella. The pub is accessible via the Broad Street Line (Route B), taking passengers northbound from Tasker-Morris to Walnut-Locust, followed by a three-block walk east on Walnut Street. It is located 1.3 miles from East Passyunk. Patrons should note that parties of six or more incur a 20% automatic tip, and online pickup orders carry a 3% card processing fee.

In South Philadelphia, Royal Tavern on Passyunk Avenue stands out as the premier destination for crispy dry-rubbed wings. Operating since 2002, the tavern serves wings that are dry-rubbed and fried to a crisp, accompanied by carrots and celery. The customization options are extensive, allowing customers to choose two sauces from five house-made varieties. These include peri peri, habanero tamarind, cherry BBQ, green sauce, and blue cheese. This flexibility allows a single order to cater to both heat seekers and those preferring milder flavors. The kitchen remains open until 1 a.m., making it a popular late-night stop. Vegetarians can order Crispy Seitan, which is served with the same sauces plus vegan ranch. Royal Tavern is located at 937 E Passyunk Ave, just 0.7 miles from East Passyunk. It is accessible via Route 47 bus or an easy walk up Passyunk Avenue from Tasker Street. Pickup orders are managed through the bar’s online ordering page.

For those seeking wings without sauce, Cafe Nhan on West Passyunk offers a distinct alternative. The kitchen brines its wings in fish sauce before dredging them in a mixture of flour and cornstarch and frying them until the crust crackles. The fish sauce provides seasoning from the inside out, resulting in a salty and savory flavor that reaches the bone. Andrew Dinh Vo and his mother, Nhan Vo, added these wings to their Vietnamese cafe menu, where they have become a must-order item for first-time visitors. Because the wings are unsauced, they travel well for takeout, maintaining their texture better than sauced counterparts. The cafe operates during daytime hours, making it suitable for lunch or early dinner. It is located on West Passyunk, 0.7 miles from East Passyunk. Accessible via the B line southbound to Snyder Station, followed by a short walk west on Snyder Avenue to 16th Street, the location is BYOB, allowing customers to bring their own beverages.

Korean fried chicken has found a dedicated following in Philadelphia, and Cafe Soho in East Oak Lane represents the pinnacle of this style. The kitchen double-fries its wings, a process that first cooks the meat and then dries out the skin to create a shattering crust capable of holding sticky sauces without becoming soggy. Each piece is brushed by hand with one of five sauces: Soy Garlic, Spicy, Seasoned (a house sweet and spicy blend), Sweet Chili, or Special. The restaurant also offers Boneless Pah-Dak for those who prefer boneless options. Due to its location in East Oak Lane, 8.9 miles from East Passyunk, it is best suited for group trips. Access involves taking the B line north to Fern Rock Transit Center and transferring to Route 70 eastbound to Oak Lane Road and Cheltenham Avenue. Delivery is available via DoorDash and Uber Eats, though the wings are crispest when eaten in.

Byrne’s Tavern in Port Richmond has built its reputation since 1978 on crabs and chicken wings. The tavern’s Special Chicken Wings are cut fresh daily, tossed in a mild house hot sauce, and finished in a pressure fryer. This method leaves the meat tender enough to fall off the bone. Orders range from a dozen up to 100 pieces, making Byrne’s an ideal choice for large groups. A 50-piece platter served with blue cheese and drafts is a quintessential Monday night experience. Wings are discounted by 25% from 6 p.m. until close on Mondays for dine-in customers. The tavern is located 5.1 miles from East Passyunk, accessible via the B line to Broad-Girard and Route 15 trolley east to Richmond-Westmoreland. Byrne’s does not accept American Express or gift cards and requires a $10 minimum for card transactions.

Sophie’s Kitchen on Washington Avenue offers Cambodian-inspired wings that diverge from standard sports bar fare. Chef Sophia Neth prepares the wings in six flavors based on Khmer cooking techniques. Lemongrass is a bright, fragrant option with mild heat. Tamarind offers a tangy sweetness, while Mango Habanero provides significant heat. Soy Garlic, Sweet Chili, and Salt & Pepper complete the list. The restaurant also serves Mohn Bouk, grilled chicken wings stuffed with lemongrass. Sophie’s Kitchen is located 0.6 miles from East Passyunk, accessible via Route 47 northbound on 7th Street to Washington Avenue. Reservations are recommended, and the restaurant is closed Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

Canh Club in Bella Vista is a takeout-only Vietnamese wing shop located a block off the Italian Market. The shop focuses on crispy fried wings with four distinct flavors. Fish Sauce Glazed is the signature option, featuring caramelized fish sauce, garlic, and chili. Honey Soy Hustle is a mild, sweet alternative, while Tangy Thai Fire offers intense heat. Salt & Pepper Crunch is dry-rubbed and fried, then tossed with garlic and a salt and pepper blend. This dry option is particularly suitable for takeout as it maintains its crispness during transport. Canh Club is located 0.7 miles from East Passyunk, accessible via Route 45 northbound to 11th Street and Christian Street. There are no seats at the location.

The Union Tap House in Manayunk offers an extensive selection of 20 sauces and dry rubs for its wings. The sauce list ranges from Mild to Hot and Suicide, with unique options like Bourbon Molasses, Honey Caribbean, Strawberry Jalapeno, and Thai Hot. Three dry rubs are available: Garlic Parm, Lemon Pepper, and Old Bay. Old Bay is a regional favorite that keeps the skin crisp longer than wet sauces. Tuesday is designated as Wing Night, which is dine-in only and attracts large crowds. The Union Tap House is located 8.0 miles from East Passyunk in Manayunk. Access involves taking the B line to City Hall, transferring to the Manayunk/Norristown Line to Ivy Ridge, and walking three blocks to the bar. Happy hour runs Monday through Friday from 4 to 6 p.m.

Hi-Lo Taco Co., primarily a taco shop, serves Crispy Smoked Wings that deserve separate attention. The wings are coated in a light gluten-free batter, smoked in mesquite, and fried to crisp the exterior. This process infuses the meat with smoke flavor while maintaining a crunchy skin. Three sauces are available: Valentina Buffalo (using Mexican hot sauce), Guajillo BBQ (mellow), and Hi-Lo Hot (a dry-rub style seasoning with salsa macha). Each order comes with house-made Maggi ranch and celery. Hi-Lo is located across the street from Moriarty’s Pub at 11th and Walnut, making it easy to visit both. It is accessible via the B line to Walnut-Locust. Happy hour drops the price of wings to $10 for dine-in customers Tuesday through Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m., and late on Friday and Saturday from 9 to 11 p.m.

Love & Honey treats wings with a Southern fried chicken approach. Whole wings are hand-dredged, buttermilk fried in small batches, and finished with a light honey drizzle. The crust is craggy and crunchy with a hint of sweetness. House-made sauces include Nashville Sauce (hot), Brown Sugar BBQ, and Honey Mustard (mild). The original shop is on Front Street in Northern Liberties, operating as a walk-up window with no seats. A second location exists at 1523 E Passyunk Ave in South Philly, offering standing room inside. Both locations serve the same wings at the same prices. Love & Honey is located 3.0 miles from East Passyunk for the Front Street shop and directly on East Passyunk for the South Philly location. Access to the Front Street shop involves taking the B line to Broad-Girard and transferring to Route 15 eastbound to Front-Girard. The 12-wing order comes without sauce, requiring customers to add sauces when ordering.

Sweet Lucy’s Smokehouse in Holmesburg has been smoking meat since 2003. Its Hickory Smoked Hot Wings share the same wood-pit flavor as the restaurant’s ribs and pulled pork. Options include mild BBQ, spicy BBQ, hot sauce, or dry. Sweet Lucy’s is a sit-down restaurant with a full bar and private room for up to 75 guests, suitable for game-day parties. It is located 9.9 miles from East Passyunk in Northeast Philadelphia. Access involves taking the B line to City Hall, transferring to the Trenton Line to Holmesburg Junction. The kitchen closes early at 8 p.m. most nights.

Doro Bet near Clark Park offers Ethiopian fried chicken wings battered in teff, a naturally gluten-free grain used for injera bread. The kitchen is halal-certified. Wings are available in two styles: Alicha (mild, seasoned with turmeric and lemon) and Awaze (spicy, built on berbere). Dips like Mitmita and Garlic Aioli are available for an additional cost. Doro Bet also runs rotating wing specials. It is a takeout counter, ideal for picnics in Clark Park. The location is 3.0 miles from East Passyunk, accessible via the T2 trolley from City Hall to Baltimore Avenue and 46th Street. Popular items can sell out early, so visiting earlier in the evening is advised.

Beyond these 12 ranked spots, other notable locations exist in South Philadelphia. Chickie’s & Pete’s on Packer Avenue is a classic pregame stop near the stadiums, offering Buffalo, sweet heat, dry rub, or barbecue wings with Crabfries. It is located half a mile from NRG Station on the B line, with half-off wings during happy hour. Mike’s BBQ at 11th and Tasker sells large whole wings in Korean, Buffalo, Hot Honey, or plain flavors, but only Thursday through Sunday from noon to 5:15 p.m., or until sold out. Orders must be placed online when the window opens at 8 a.m.

In Center City, Walnut Street offers a concentrated wing crawl. Moriarty’s Pub and Hi-Lo Taco Co. face each other at 11th and Walnut. Crunchik’n at 212 S 11th St adds Korean fried chicken to the mix, with double-fried wings marinated for 24 hours. Options include honey soy, sweet chili, soy garlic, Korean BBQ, and Volcano sauce, in orders of 5, 8, or 10.

Fishtown’s wing scene is supported by neighbors in Port Richmond and Northern Liberties. Byrne’s Tavern and Love & Honey are nearby. Inside Fishtown, Interstate Drafthouse on E Palmer St offers ancho honey chicken wings and a vegan seitan version with soy chipotle aioli. The Fresh Works on Belgrade St in Port Richmond offers bone-in and boneless wings with over six sauces, including Enfuego house hot sauce. It is closed Mondays and posts 50-wing deals on Instagram for game days.

In Northeast Philadelphia, Sweet Lucy’s Smokehouse and the original Chickie’s & Pete’s at 4010 Robbins Ave in Mayfair are key destinations. The original Chickie’s & Pete’s began in 1977 when Peter and Henrietta Ciarrocchi bought the Robbins Avenue taproom. It serves the same wings as its larger locations. Access from South Philly involves taking the B line to City Hall, transferring to the L line eastbound to Frankford Transit Center, and taking Route 66 northbound to Frankford Avenue and Robbins Avenue.

The preparation methods for these wings vary significantly. Whole wings include the drumette, flat, and tip. Moriarty’s, Love & Honey, and Mike’s BBQ serve whole wings. Dredged or battered wings are fried once, as seen at Cafe Nhan and Sophie’s Kitchen. Fish sauce brining is used by Cafe Nhan to season from the inside out. Cambodian flavors are applied after frying at Sophie’s Kitchen. Vietnamese kitchens use fish sauce glazes or dry rubs, as seen at Canh Club. Buttermilk frying with honey drizzle is used by Love & Honey. Teff battering is used by Doro Bet for gluten-free options. Double-frying is employed by Cafe Soho and Crunchik’n to create a crisp crust that holds sauce. Smoking is used by Hi-Lo (mesquite) and Sweet Lucy’s (hickory). Dry rubs are applied before frying at Royal Tavern, Union Tap House, and Hi-Lo.

The Buffalo wing originated at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York, in 1964, when Teressa Bellissimo fried wings and tossed them in a secret sauce for her son’s friends. The classic version remains simple: unbreaded wings fried and tossed in hot sauce and butter, served with celery and blue cheese. For the best Buffalo wings in Philadelphia, Moriarty’s Pub and The Union Tap House offer classic bar orders. Hi-Lo’s Valentina Buffalo provides a Mexican hot sauce twist. For pure heat, Union Tap’s Suicide, Hi-Lo Hot, and Sophie’s Mango Habanero are top choices.

Dry-rubbed wings test the quality of the fry, as there is no sauce to soften the skin. Royal Tavern, Union Tap House (Lemon Pepper, Garlic Parm, Old Bay), and Canh Club (Salt & Pepper Crunch) excel in this category. A second fry provides crust strength for glazes, utilized by Cafe Soho and Crunchik’n. Vietnamese and Cambodian kitchens use fish sauce, lemongrass, and tamarind, as demonstrated by Canh Club, Cafe Nhan, and Sophie’s Kitchen.

To determine if a wing spot deserves a return visit, consider boneless wings, which are breast meat pieces breaded and sauced, closer to nuggets than true wings. They lack the crisp skin that makes whole wings desirable. Ordering for crowds requires knowing each spot’s limits. Byrne’s serves up to 100 pieces. Love & Honey sells 3, 6, or 12 whole wings. Canh Club sells 6, 10, or 20. Cafe Soho sells 10 or 18. Sweet Lucy’s sells by the half dozen or dozen. Plan on 6 to 10 wings per person when wings are the meal. For long games, order a second round halfway through to ensure hot, crisp wings.

Moriarty’s Pub is the top pick for classic wings, with five whole wings in Signature Sauce for $14.95, open until midnight. Royal Tavern is the top South Philly pick, with crispy dry-rubbed wings and two sauces for $16, open until 1 a.m. Byrne’s Tavern offers 25% off wings on Monday nights from 6 p.m. to close. The Union Tap House runs Wing Night all day on Tuesdays, dine-in only. Hi-Lo Taco Co. drops smoked wings to $10 at happy hour Tuesday through Saturday from 4 to 6 p.m.

Doro Bet offers gluten-free and halal-certified wings battered in teff for $13, in mild Alicha or spicy Awaze. Hi-Lo also uses a gluten-free coating on its smoked wings. To reheat leftovers, use an oven or air fryer at 400°F until the internal temperature reaches 165°F. Avoid microwaves, which steam the skin and make wings rubbery.

The ranking was based on six factors, with wing quality carrying the most weight. For a first round at a bar, Moriarty’s or Royal Tavern are recommended. For takeout, Canh Club or Love & Honey are ideal. For large groups, Byrne’s on Monday is the best choice. Cafe Soho and Sweet Lucy’s are worth the trip for Korean and smoked wings not found in South Philly. These 12 spots represent the best wings in Philadelphia for 2026.
