Berliner Tageszeitung - Low-Cost Homemade Ideas Offer Alternatives for Halloween Costumes

Household materials, charity-shop finds and reusable accessories can provide inexpensive alternatives to commercially produced Halloween costumes.

From ghostly old bedsheets and wicked witches to bin-bag bats and homemade monsters, looking spooktacular this Halloween needn’t cost the earth.

Halloween is creeping up on us once again, and with it comes that familiar question from children and grown-ups alike: what on earth are we going to wear?

The shops are bursting with costumes, from elaborate witches and vampires to terrifying zombies and all manner of creepy creatures. But with some outfits costing £20, £30 or considerably more, dressing the whole family for one night can quickly turn into a financial horror story.

The good news? Some of the most imaginative, funniest and downright frightening Halloween costumes can be created for next to nothing, using things already lurking in your wardrobe, cupboards or recycling box.

Having lived in America for around 14 years, I can tell you that Halloween across the Atlantic is quite an experience. Americans really do embrace the occasion, and almost anything goes when it comes to costumes. You’ll see people dressed as celebrities, politicians, superheroes, cartoon characters, giant hot dogs, breakfast cereals and even household appliances. If someone can dream it up, someone else will probably dress as it!

Entire neighbourhoods join in, houses are transformed into extraordinary displays and families often plan their costumes weeks in advance.

Here in Britain, while fancy dress is becoming increasingly adventurous, we still have a wonderful affection for the traditional spooky side of Halloween. Witches, ghosts, vampires, skeletons, zombies and pumpkins remain firm favourites, and there’s something rather lovely about seeing little monsters heading out into the autumn darkness clutching their trick-or-treat buckets.

So, whether you’re preparing for a school disco, a Halloween party, a family gathering or an evening of trick-or-treating, here are some of the best costume ideas for 2026, along with a few clever tricks to keep the costs frighteningly low.

The classics never die!

If you’re looking for a costume that never goes out of fashion, you really can’t beat the traditional Halloween favourites.

A witch is one of the easiest outfits to put together. Find an old black dress, skirt or oversized jumper, add some stripy tights, a homemade pointed hat and a broomstick, and you’re ready to cast a spell. A little green face paint or dark eye make-up completes the transformation.

Vampires are equally straightforward. A white shirt, black trousers, dark jacket and a dramatic cape are all you need. Add a pale face, some fake fangs and a trickle of theatrical blood, and you’ve got yourself a miniature Dracula.

Zombies are perhaps the ultimate budget costume because the worse the clothes look, the better! Take an old shirt or pair of trousers that nobody wants, carefully cut a few ragged holes, add some washable fake dirt and create a suitably ghastly complexion with face paint. Messy hair is positively encouraged.

And don’t forget the skeleton. A black outfit with bones drawn or attached using white fabric tape can look remarkably effective, especially when paired with a painted skull face.

The humble bedsheet makes a comeback

Sometimes the simplest ideas are still the best.

The traditional white-sheet ghost has been frightening generations of children, and it remains one of the cheapest Halloween costumes imaginable.

All you need is an old white sheet, a little imagination and perhaps a few accessories.

Rather than cutting eyeholes that can slip out of position and obscure vision, try turning the sheet into a loose ghostly poncho, with an opening for the head and the face left uncovered. White face paint and dark circles around the eyes add the finishing touches.

For something a little different, turn your ghost into a Victorian spectre with an old hat, a string of pearls or a battered waistcoat.

Or create a ghostly bride using an old white dress, a scrap of net curtain as a veil and a bunch of wilted artificial flowers.

The possibilities are endless, and the results can be wonderfully eerie.

Bin bags, cardboard boxes and a little black magic

Before you throw anything away this October, consider whether it might make the perfect Halloween accessory.

A clean black bin bag can be transformed into a dramatic cape, a witch’s ragged skirt or even a pair of bat wings. For children, attach lightweight wings to an ordinary black top rather than wrapping plastic around the body. Keep plastic bags away from young children’s faces and necks.

Cardboard boxes are another treasure trove of costume possibilities.

An old delivery box can become a haunted house, a walking coffin, a monster’s head or even a robot from a Halloween horror film. Paint it, decorate it with paper spiders and cobwebs, and suddenly your recycling has become the star of the party.

Black tights with ladders in them? Perfect for a witch. An old pair of curtains? A magnificent vampire cape. Scraps of fabric? Ideal for a ragged scarecrow or patchwork monster.

Even empty kitchen-roll tubes can be turned into spooky accessories, while cereal boxes make excellent lightweight masks and costume decorations.

Just remember to keep costumes comfortable, well ventilated and clear of naked flames.

The best Halloween costume ideas for 2026

For those looking for inspiration, here are some of our favourite ideas for this year’s celebrations.

The Wednesday-inspired gothic look: A black dress, white collar, dark tights and two neat plaits create an instantly recognisable spooky schoolgirl look, inspired by the popular television character.

The classic vampire: A timeless choice for adults and children, and particularly effective with a dramatic homemade cape.

The haunted doll: An old-fashioned dress, ribbons, pale face paint and carefully drawn cracks across the cheeks can create a wonderfully unsettling effect.

The mad scientist: A borrowed white shirt worn as a laboratory coat, wild hair, oversized glasses and a few cardboard inventions make a brilliantly funny costume.

The mummy: Old white fabric strips attached to comfortable clothing can create a convincing ancient Egyptian monster. Avoid wrapping fabric tightly around the body or face.

The scarecrow: An old checked shirt, jeans, a floppy hat and a few securely attached raffia strands make a fantastic autumnal outfit.

The black cat: Black leggings, a black top, homemade cardboard ears and a painted nose are all you need. Add a tail made from stuffed fabric for extra effect.

The pumpkin: An oversized orange T-shirt decorated with a black jack-o’-lantern face makes an adorable costume for younger children.

The headless horseman’s companion: A dark cloak, an old-fashioned hat and a pumpkin lantern create a suitably gothic character without needing an elaborate costume.

The family of monsters: Why not get everyone involved? Mum can be a witch, Dad a vampire, the children little zombies and even the family dog can join in with a comfortable, pet-safe Halloween accessory.

Ten frightfully clever ways to save money

Raid the wardrobe first. That forgotten black dress, old suit or oversized shirt could be the foundation of a fantastic costume. Charity shops are also brilliant for finding unusual pieces for a pound or two.

Swap with friends. Children often outgrow costumes after just one Halloween. Arrange a costume swap with other parents and give last year’s outfits a second life.

Third, make your own accessories. A pointed witch’s hat can be fashioned from black card, while bat ears, devil horns and spooky crowns are surprisingly easy to make.

Fourth, use face paint instead of expensive masks. A painted skull, vampire face or cat’s whiskers can transform ordinary clothes into a complete outfit. Choose skin-safe products and follow the instructions.

Fifth, think about the weather. Halloween evenings in Britain can be chilly, so build costumes around warm clothing. Black leggings, thermals and a cosy jumper can easily be hidden beneath a spooky creation.

Sixth, use battery-powered lights to make costumes glow. Small LED accessories can look spectacular after dark, although batteries must be securely enclosed and kept away from young children.

Seventh, turn costume-making into a family activity. Children often enjoy creating their outfits just as much as wearing them, and it’s a wonderful excuse for an afternoon of cutting, sticking, painting and laughing together.

Eighth, don’t overlook make-up you already own. Dark eyeshadow, eyeliner and lipstick can create dramatic effects without buying an expensive Halloween make-up kit. Use only cosmetics suitable for the skin and area being decorated.

Ninth, make one brilliant accessory the centrepiece. A homemade broomstick, a spooky hat or a cardboard gravestone can make an otherwise simple outfit look fantastic.

And finally, remember that a little imagination beats an expensive price tag every time. A costume doesn’t need to be shop-bought to win the fancy dress competition.

A little Halloween magic for the grown-ups too

Of course, Halloween isn’t just for children.

Adults can have enormous fun putting together their own costumes, especially if they’re attending a party or accompanying youngsters on their trick-or-treat adventures.

A black suit and pale make-up can create a sinister gothic gentleman. An old wedding dress can become a ghostly bride. A long black coat and a homemade lantern can transform someone into a mysterious Victorian figure.

Couples can even coordinate their outfits as a vampire and victim, witch and wizard, or a pair of wandering ghosts.

And for anyone who really doesn’t fancy dressing up, a black outfit, a witch’s hat and a little face paint are over enough to join in the fun.

Don’t let the fright turn into a real nightmare

One final word of caution. Some Halloween costumes, particularly those made from synthetic materials, can catch fire easily, so always keep children away from candles, bonfires and other naked flames. Battery-operated lanterns are a much safer alternative.

Avoid long trailing fabric that could cause trips, make sure children can see clearly, and choose comfortable shoes for walking around the neighbourhood.

Reflective accessories or small lights are particularly useful for children out trick-or-treating after dark. Youngsters should also be accompanied by a responsible adult.

And if you’re making costumes with plastic, string or recycled materials, make sure there are no choking, suffocation or entanglement hazards.

The best Halloween memories don’t come with a price tag

Halloween should be about fun, laughter, creativity and perhaps the occasional good-natured fright, not about how much money you’ve spent.

Some of the most memorable costumes are the ones that have been cobbled together at the kitchen table, with bits of cardboard, old clothes, a splash of face paint and plenty of imagination.

So before you rush out and spend a small fortune on this year’s Halloween outfit, have a rummage through the cupboards. You might be surprised by the terrifying treasures hiding inside.

After all, when it comes to Halloween, the only thing that should be truly frightening is your costume — not the bill!

And who knows? That old bedsheet gathering dust in the airing cupboard might just become the best-dressed ghost in the neighbourhood.

Happy Halloween!
